Fly with me: Rockets!

Date: July 29 - Aug 2

3..2..1...LIFTOFF! Students will have a blast as they build and launch their very own fully-functional and reusable rockets in this special camp focused on flight. The students will assemble all the pieces of their rocket kits step by step and then watch as they soar over 500 feet in the air! But how does a rocket fly up that high? Well, the students will learn all about the science behind Newton’s Laws and how they allow a rocket to lift off the ground, and they will participate in exciting experiments that mimic Newton’s Laws in action during a rocket launch. The students will learn about the history behind rockets and space shuttles and about the mechanism of how model rocket engines work to propel the rockets into the air. They will also experiment to see just how high different engine strengths can propel the rockets (weather permitting). On the Thursday of camp, students will take one day field trip to the TinkRworks Engagement Center to explore their makerspace and customize their rockets with homemade stickers made using toolsets like the vinyl cutter. Finally, the students will be able to launch their rockets multiple times throughout the week, and we will even attach a camera to an instructor rocket to see the view from 500 feet in the air! This camp is perfect for students who like to shoot for the stars, so come fly with us!

What the students will take home: Completed Rockets

Grades: Rising 1st -3rd

Min/Max Students: 6/12

Note: Camp meets everyday except Thursday at Hinsdale Community House. On Thursday only, Students should be dropped and picked up from Tinkrworks, 21 W 2nd St #300, Hinsdale

Game of Drones

Date: July 29 - Aug 2

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and join us in this one-of-a-kind design, build and fly camp! In Game of Drones, students will build their very own quadcopters (drone with 4 propellers) from scratch and will learn about the science of flight and how each component of the quadcopter works. Students will start their week on Monday with a one day field trip to TinkRworks Engagement Center in Hinsdale to explore their makerspace and customize their drone frames using the laser cutter! After customization, the students will then attach brushed DC motors, motor mounts, propellers, and flight-controller boards to their frames to fully complete their drones. Once construction is finished, they will polish their piloting skills as they learn to fly and participate in fun quadcopter challenges. Finally, the best part is the students get to take home their drones and wireless controllers to continue the fun! Complete with cool lift experiments and Newton’s Laws activities, this camp is not one to miss!

What the students take home: A fully-functional quadcopter and transmitter along with a primary and back-up battery (with charger)

Grades: Rising 4th – 6th

Min/Max Students: 6/12

Note: Camp meets at Hinsdale Community House from Tuesday to Friday. On Monday only, Students should be dropped and picked from Tinkrworks, 21 W 2nd St #300, Hinsdale

Robotics: Galaxy Droids

Date: Aug 05 - Aug 09

Join us on a journey far far away to build a one-of-a-kind Star Wars themed robot droid! In this camp, students will dive into learning all about robots. They will discover the difference between autonomous robots and other machines, and also the similarities between robots and humans. Students will start their week on Monday with a one day field trip to TinkRworks Engagement Center in Hinsdale to explore their makerspace and to customize the chassis of their Droids using the laser cutter! They will then assemble their droids by bringing together the customized chassis, an Arduino micro-controller, sensors, and other electronic devices. They’ll spend time learning not just about the electronic components, but will program their droid to move, explore, and play star wars themed sounds! To round out the fun, the students will participate in some pretty cool Star Wars activties, and they will learn a lot about our galaxy by comparing real planets to Star Wars planets. Come be a Jedi (or a Sith) for a week and build your mini robot!

What the students will take home: Fully programmed Droid robots

Grades: Rising 1st -3rd

Min/Max Students: 6/12

Note: Camp meets at Hinsdale Community House from Tuesday to Friday. On Monday only, Students should be dropped and picked from Tinkrworks, 21 W 2nd St #300, Hinsdale

Robotics: Build-a-Bot

Date: Aug 05 - Aug 09

Robots are ever-increasing in popularity for reasons of elevating work efficiency, enhancing safety, and of course, for having fun! As part of this camp, students will get the chance to create their own fully-functional robot using their imagination! They’ll spend time learning not just about the electronic components, but will code their bots to move, explore, and interact with their environment. Campers will start by building a TinkRworks-designed robot chassis and incorporating motors, LEDs, and sensors onto the body. They then will program the robot to move and complete fun challenges, and even control the color of lights and types of sounds the robot will make. On Wednesday students will take a one day field trip to TinkRworks Engagement Center in Hinsdale to explore their makerspace and to customize their Bot using tool sets like the laser cutter. Finally, they will program their robot to move with a push of a button on a remote control! Best of all, they will take their robots home with them at the end of the camp!

What the students take home: Completed Bots with remote control

Grades: Rising 4th – 6th

Min/Max Students: 6/12

Note: Camp meets everyday except Wednesday at Hinsdale Community House. On Wednesday only, Students should be dropped and picked from Tinkrworks, 21 W 2nd St #300, Hinsdale
